Why We Endorse Michael

Michael is fighting to make Edmonton a more affordable city with lower taxes, lower rent, and faster transit.

The backbone of my agenda? Support strong public services and oppose privatization. My approach? Standing up for a fair deal for our city–to the province, to corporate interests, and anything that is not in the best interest of the public.

About Michael

Michael Janz has represented Ward papastew on City Council since 2021.

Prior to City Council, he served three terms as an elected Edmonton Public School District Trustee from 2010-2021, serving as Board Chair, Vice Chair, and Vice President of the Alberta School Boards Association. He is committed to helping build the city Edmontonians deserve and is looking forward to a council that is interested in moving us forward, not back.

Michael’s qualifications include:

  • As a city councillor, Michael has stood up against every attempt to privatize city work.
  • As public school trustee, Michael helped lead a campaign to pressure the then NDP government to remove public subsidies to private schools in Alberta.
  • Michael was a vocal supporter of creating the first landmark sexual orientation and gender identity policy (SOGI) at Edmonton Public Schools which allowed students the ability to start a gay straight alliance. At the time, it was the first of its kind in the prairies and led to many other school boards looking to create similar policies.
  • Michael was a former Vice-President of the Edmonton Bike Commuters Society (renamed Bike Edmonton) and as city councillor has been a vocal advocate of adding transportation choices.
  • During his time at the University of Alberta, Michael was involved in the student housing movement, advocating for more student housing choices.
